Mechanical seal
The mechanical seal refers to a device that prevents fluid leakage, composed of at least one pair of end faces perpendicular to the axis of rotation that remain in contact and slide relatively under the pressure of the fluid and the elastic (or magnetic) force of the compensating mechanism, along with the adjustment of the auxiliary seal. The elastic loading mechanism and the auxiliary seal in the metal bellows mechanical seal are called metal bellows seal.
Summary of the mechanical seal:
The mechanical seal refers to a device that prevents fluid leakage, composed of at least one pair of end faces perpendicular to the axis of rotation that remain in contact and slide against each other under the pressure of the fluid and the elastic (or magnetic) force of the compensating mechanism, along with an auxiliary seal. The elastic loading mechanism and the auxiliary seal constitute the metallic bellows mechanical seal, known as the metallic bellows seal. In light seals, rubber bellows are also used as an auxiliary seal; due to the limited elasticity of the rubber bellows, a spring is generally required to provide the loading force.
Components of the mechanical seal:
1. Main components of the mechanical seal: rotating ring and stationary ring.
2. Auxiliary seals: sealing rings (with O, X, U shapes, wedge-shaped, flexible rectangular graphite, PTFE-coated rubber rings, etc.).
3. Elastic compensation mechanism: springs, thrust rings; spring seat and keys or various screws.
4. They are classified into single faces, double single faces, balanced type, unbalanced type, arbitrary rotation direction, and fixed rotation direction.
Principle of the mechanical seal:
The mechanical seal works through one or several pairs of end faces perpendicular to the axis that slide against each other, remaining in contact under the pressure of the fluid and the elastic (or magnetic) force of the compensating mechanism, along with an auxiliary seal, to achieve shaft sealing that prevents leaks.
The common structure of the mechanical seal consists of a stationary ring (static ring) 1, rotating ring (moving ring) 2, elastic element 3, spring seat 4, fixing screw 5, auxiliary seal ring of the rotating ring 6, and auxiliary seal ring of the stationary ring 8, among other components. The anti-rotation pin 7 is fixed on the cover 9 to prevent the rotation of the stationary ring.
The rotating ring and the stationary ring can also be called compensating or non-compensating rings depending on whether they have axial compensation capability.
