    Packing summary

The packing, also called packing seal, known as "packing gasket." It is generally made of softer linear woven materials, which are filled into the sealing cavity in strips with a square cross-section to achieve sealing. Packing was originally used to stop liquid leaks by plugging leakage channels with fibers such as cotton and hemp, mainly as shaft seals in water lifting machinery. Due to its wide availability, easy processing, low cost, reliable sealing, and simple operation, it has remained in use to this day. Currently, packing gaskets are widely used in shaft seals of centrifugal pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, agitators, and ship propellers, as well as in piston pumps, reciprocating compressors, reciprocating shaft seals in refrigerators, and rotary seals in valve stems, among others.

    Types of packing

Types of packing (packing gaskets) include aramid packing, graphite packing, PTFE packing, high water-based packing, carbon fiber packing, aramid and carbon fiber packing, aramid and PTFE packing, ramie packing, tallow packing, asbestos packing, ceramic packing, oil-impregnated packing, rubber packing, etc.

Asbestos packing is woven with heat-resistant lubricated asbestos thread and graphite, suitable for seals on rotating shafts, reciprocating pistons, or valve stems. The media include steam, air, industrial water, and heavy petroleum products. Depending on working conditions, oil-impregnated asbestos packing can be made with steel wire (or nickel wire, stainless steel) and lead powder.

Graphite packing is woven with graphite thread reinforced with stainless steel wire, forming a flexible and high-strength woven packing. Its excellent sealing performance when combined with other packings makes it a very outstanding sealing material, especially under high pressure. Except for some strong oxidizers, it can be used to seal hot water, high-temperature and high-pressure steam, heat transfer fluids, hydrogen, ammonia, organic solvents, hydrocarbons, low-temperature liquids, among other media. It is also a unique universal packing, recommended for abrasive media with solid particles, superheated steam, solvents, liquefied gases, syrups, and other abrasive fluids.

Aramid woven packing has excellent lubricity and wear resistance, with the most outstanding characteristics of high strength, high abrasion resistance, good chemical resistance, high resilience, low cold flow, and easy quick disassembly. It is especially suitable for dynamic seals containing media with solid particles.

PTFE packing is woven with pure polytetrafluoroethylene fibers, without treatment with PTFE emulsion or lubricants. Due to its solid weave, it is flexible and adjustable, so it fits well to the shaft and packing box, with excellent corrosion resistance, good self-lubrication, and non-stick properties. It can be used in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, paper, chemical fiber, and fine chemical industries where contamination is not allowed, and is suitable for all chemical media except soluble alkali metals and free fluoride ions.

    Packing principle

Operating principle of packing (packing gasket): the shaft surface is very irregular at the microscopic level and can only partially fit with the packing. Therefore, there is a small space between the packing and the shaft, like a labyrinth. The medium is blocked several times in this labyrinth to achieve the sealing effect.

    Technical requirements for packing

① When cutting the packing (packing gasket), it is best to roll it on a round steel bar with the same diameter as the valve stem to ensure the correct size and a parallel cut. The cut should be clean, without loose asbestos fibers. The preferred cutting angle is 45°.

② Each packing ring (packing gasket) should be pressed individually into the packing box. When installing valve packing, a small amount of dry flaky graphite powder or lubricant should be placed between each ring.

③ To facilitate installation, when pressing asbestos packings wrapped in aluminum foil, a thin layer of flaky graphite powder mixed with oil should be applied to the inner edge of the packing.

④ The width of the selected packing (packing gasket) should match the size of the packing box or be 1~2 mm larger.

⑤ When pressing oil-impregnated asbestos packings, it is better that the first and last rings are dry asbestos packings to prevent oil leakage.

⑥ When pressing the packing (packing gasket), the joints of the rings should be staggered, generally at an angle of 120° or 180°; the packing should not be pressed too hard and should be adjusted appropriately according to the operating pressure.

⑦ The depth of the pressure cap inserted into the packing box should generally be the height of one packing ring, but not less than 5, and space should be left for additional tightening.

⑧ When installing the pressure cap, a uniform space should be maintained between the cap and the stem to avoid uneven pressure causing rapid wear. Generally, the space should be maintained between 0.1 and 0.15.

⑨ Key points to ensure the quality of packing installation are: correct selection; careful inspection (check the stem, packing box, packing, etc.); precise dimensions; good pressure (the pressure of the first ring is key to ensuring that each deformed packing ring after installation is uniform in thickness).

    FAQ

    Q

What products do you mainly produce?

    A

Zoomlion Pump Industry manufactures various large industrial centrifugal pumps. The main products include: self-balancing multistage pumps, multistage centrifugal pumps, single-stage centrifugal pumps, split-case pumps, chemical pumps, submersible pumps, pipeline pumps, long-shaft pumps, condenser pumps, and more.

    Q

Can you help me choose a model?

    A

Of course! If the water pump model is not selected accurately, it can cause significant problems. After you take it back, it might be either too small to meet the usage requirements or too large, resulting in higher electricity and fuel costs, increasing the operating expenses.

    Q

Why is the price quotation so slow?

    A

Because centrifugal pumps are non-standard custom products with many models and a wide price range. Even for the same model, the price varies greatly depending on the materials and configurations used. Taking the most common pump accessory—the impeller—as an example, the price of a stainless steel impeller is several times that of a cast iron impeller. Therefore, we need to clearly confirm the relevant information to provide you with an accurate price. Normally, if you provide comprehensive information, we can quote within 5 minutes.

    Q

What information should I provide when I need a quote?

    A

Usually, if you want to get an accurate quote, it is recommended that you provide us with the following information: pump flow rate, head, on-site operating voltage, frequency, temperature of the conveyed liquid, pH value, solid particle content, on-site installation conditions (horizontal or vertical installation), and other related details. If you are not very familiar with these, it’s okay; our sales manager will assist you in determining them.

    Q

Do you have centrifugal pumps in stock?

    A

There are many models and configurations of centrifugal pumps. Except for a small number of commonly used standard models that are in stock, the vast majority of models and configurations are not stocked and are customized products. We need to first select the pump based on your site conditions such as flow rate, head, medium temperature, pH value, and installation conditions. After determining the pump model and configuration, we can then place an order with the workshop for production.

    Q

What is your usual delivery time?

    A

Models in stock can be shipped by the next day at the latest. Others are custom-made, and depending on the product size and specific project conditions, the delivery time is generally between 7-90 days. Please consult our sales manager for details: 0731-88632200 。
