The water pump coupling consists of two halves, which connect respectively to the driving shaft and the driven shaft. The coupling is used to connect the motor with the main shaft of the water pump. Its main function is to rotate together and transmit torque and energy; additionally, it can slightly adjust concentricity, vibrations, and other issues. According to the type of coupling, it is divided into diaphragm type, pin type, rigid, etc., and should be selected according to specific working conditions. The coupling is located at the connection between the bottom of the motor and the top of the water pump, fixed to the shaft with a key. Coupling materials vary, commonly 45# steel and cast steel.

Types and characteristics of pump couplings
The claw-type coupling, also called elastic block coupling, has the structure shown in figure 4-15. Its features are small size, light weight, simple structure, and easy installation. It is commonly used in low power and less critical applications. The maximum allowable torque is generally less than 850 N·m, and it is recommended that the maximum shaft diameter does not exceed 50 mm.
The pin elastic coupling connects the pin with the flanges of the two halves of the coupling. One end of the pin is fixed with a tapered surface and a nut in the tapered hole of the half coupling flange, while the other end has an elastic sleeve installed in the pin hole of the other half coupling flange. The elastic sleeve is made of rubber, as shown in figure 4-16. Its features are simple structure, easy installation, easy replacement, small size, light weight, and high transmission torque.
The diaphragm coupling uses a set of very thin metal plates, formed in various shapes, which are bolted to the two halves of the coupling on the driving and driven shafts, as shown in figure 4-17. Its structure is simple, requires no lubrication or maintenance, resists deformation from high temperature, has good alignment performance, high reliability, and high transmission torque, although its price is relatively high.
